means that any force acting upon a body produces its own effect, whether acting alone or in conjunction with other forces. This does not mean that if a motor boat, for example, starts directly across a river, it will land at the same point as it would if there were no current, but it does mean that the work done by the motor will carry the boat across the stream just as though there were no current flowing.
