Demonstration. - Connect the cell used … to an ammeter, and observe that the current increases when the distance between the plates is decreased, and decreases while the plate is being lifted from the liquid.

Since the E. M. F. of the cell remains constant, this change in the current must be due to a change in the resistance of the cell. The resistance of a cell is called internal resistance and depends upon the size, shape, and material of the cell. It is this internal resistance that causes the loss of potential in the cell.
