The underlying quality of the FLEECE vowel is that of [i(:)] throughout the region. However, this is not always purely monophthongal, a frequent tendency being towards a short upgliding diphthong [ɪi]. In the North of England, the West Midlands and South-east England, wider diphthongs [əɪ] or [eɪ ~ εɪ] are found.
