What motivates a person with ASD may not be social rewards such as verbal praise and encouragement. These should not be ignored but rather augmented by other rewards. These may be time spent on their area of interest or playing with a particular toy. For one child it was time to work with a Teaching Assistant who had sparkling ear-rings that the child had taken to.
