Classroom adaptations

Educators can help learners with SSS in the following ways:

■ Use beige, green, grey or recycled paper instead of white.

■ Computer screens can also be used with different colored backgrounds.

■ Think about the lighting – encourage the use of natural light and try to avoid using fluorescent lights.

■ Use sloping boards to reduce the glare of light from the page. Caps can also be used in a similar way, but this may well not fit in with general school rules.

■ Do not expect learners with SSS to share reading material.

■When working on a board or overhead, use colored chalk or highlighters.

It is clear to all educators that there is a whole range of connections on SSS with other difficulties for classroom identification. However, as the case study shows, it is another link that an educator can use to make that complete chain of learning skills and experiences for learners.
