Four qualities that one must be careful of when seeking knowledge
10:35:3 2024-01-21 1701

Knowledge is a light that dispels the darkness of illusions and ignorance. With knowledge, an individual’s faith deepens and his soul rises to the heights of spiritual perfection and the ranks of humanity. However, some people may make mistakes in their motives, and their goal of seeking knowledge is cheap and even worthless, as it may be a source of evil. Instead of knowledge being a path to Paradise, it becomes a path the depths of Hell, we seek refuge in Allah from it: So what are these four things that destroy the moral system of the seeker of knowledge?

The first matter: that the goal of seeking knowledge and the motive is hypocrisy and the love of fame.

The second matter: for the purpose of controversy, criticism, and challenge of opinions and personalities, and to belittle the value of others and their academic standings.

The third matter: for the purpose of arrogance and condescension over scholars and others.

Fourth matter: Competition for leadership, positions, and administrative positions

This is what Imam Ali, peace be upon him, mentioned when he said:

“Take from knowledge what appears to you, and beware of seeking it for four qualities:

That you may brag about it to scholars, or quarrel with fools with it, or show off with it in assemblies, or turn the faces of the people towards you in order to show authority.”

Therefore, in order for the seeker of knowledge to obtain its spiritual benefits and for his personality to be endowed with virtues, he must:

Have Sincerity based on his motives and intentions, and he constantly asks himself: What is my goal of studying?

Humility... through it knowledge is sustained and hearts are drawn to the sincere seeker of knowledge

The signs of this are five characteristics:

- He avoids arguments and hypocrisy, even if he is right.

- He accepts advice from others and does not hesitate to learn from anyone.

- He hates being flattered and avoids being seen.

- Objectivity in dialogue and criticism.

- Academic excellence is positive competition in the pursuit of knowledge to obtain high grades.

Let those who seek knowledge remember that knowledge is a means, not an end, and a path to happiness in this world and the hereafter.
