Make your enemy a friend
7:53:6 2023-04-27 1370

People are of three kinds: friend, enemy, and whoever is neutral.

What is the best way to deal with each of these categories?

Someone might say: The answer is clear. We oppose the enemy, befriend the friend, and stand neutral with the neutral.

But isn't this what the "cat" also does, as it fights every enemy cat, keeps pace with the friendly cat, and remains neutral with neutral cats?

A person must always strive for development, especially with regard to his relations with others. He must try to win over his enemy in order to destroy the source of hostility, and strive to make the neutral a friend, and make the friend an ally.

It is noteworthy that a woman heard former US President Abraham Lincoln praising his enemies during the American Civil War, sympathizing with them and complimenting them with kindness. Surprised, she asked him: “Do you single out this beautiful praise for the enemies you seek to destroy?”

Lincoln replied. “Do I not destroy them, madam, when I make them my friends?”

Whoever thinks that the best way to bring down the enemy is to eliminate him is mistaken. Destroying the phenomenon of hostility itself is better, by turning the enemy into a neutral, and turning the neutral into a friend.

Isn't that what Imam al-Baqir, peace be upon him, did when one of his enemies came to him and shouted at him saying: You are cows!

The Imam, peace be upon him, said: Rather, I am Baqir.

The man said: You are cows.

The Imam, peace be upon him, said: I am Baqir.

The man repeated his insult to the imam for the third batch, but the imam did not respond to him except with the same answer.

The man resentfully said: The cook's son has come!

The Imam, peace be upon him, replied: This is her profession.

The man said: You are the son of a foul-tongued woman.

The Imam, peace be upon him, said to him: If it is as you say, may Allah forgive her, and if it is not as you say, may Allah forgive you.

In front of this great patience, the man's hostility collapsed, and he kissed the hand of the Imam, peace be upon him, while saying: Allah knows where he places his message.

The imam's patience shattered the hostile state in this man's soul. And turn him from an enemy to a friend... And this is the great success!
