“I have not yet found a fully integrated personality.”
We hear this statement repeatedly, yet we have never stopped to examine it closely. Or perhaps we have, but we have not questioned the person who said it because we agree with the idea being presented. We simply say, “Perfection belongs to Allah alone,” believing that all human beings are incapable of attaining this lofty status. That is all that can be said—or is it?
Is this judgment realistic, or is it merely the result of our habitual repetition of an old saying and an established idea in our minds, without any need for further investigation or reconsideration?
The issue stems from a confusion in understanding the concept itself. Here, integration means that a human being is capable of attaining perfection in various fields, whether behavioral or intellectual. It does not mean comparing human beings with their Creator and then saying that perfection belongs to Allah alone. After all, what is the relationship between the Creator and the created? Our Lord exists beyond the realm of comparison, and the matter concerns human beings alone. There is absolutely no basis for such a comparison. Therefore, the only conclusion we can draw is that human beings are capable of attaining perfection.
The claim that human beings can achieve perfection in several fields is not merely a fantasy. Allah Almighty has endowed us with ability, strength, and energy, and He has required many things of us, whether in the form of commands or prohibitions. If we lacked the ability and capacity to fulfill these requirements, would He have commanded or forbidden us from doing them?
When rational people agree that a person can reach the pinnacle of creativity and excellence in a particular field, do they not describe this as perfection? They might say, “Zayd has achieved perfection in that profession,” or, “The international automobile company has reached the peak of excellence and advancement.” We witness this reality clearly in our daily lives today. Who, then, would oppose this idea? It becomes perfectly clear when viewed from this perspective.
However, one objection may arise: Is a person capable of being creative in everything and, consequently, becoming fully integrated? Is this, in fact, what is meant by an integrated personality?
An integrated personality is one that is creative, productive, and disciplined in both behavior and thought. It represents the culmination of all positive personality types. For example, there is an interactive personality, a productive personality, a creative personality, a balanced personality, an effective personality, and others. The integrated personality is one in which all these positive personality traits have come together, while preserving the qualities that characterize each of them.
Some people may lack the ability to analyze personalities well enough to recognize that an integrated personality represents the culmination of these different types. Because an integrated personality encompasses numerous dimensions and characteristics, it is difficult to grasp it fully from every angle or explore all its details.
Nevertheless, one thing we can say is that human beings possess a remarkable ability to change themselves and those around them. This is the principle presented in the Holy Qur’an: change begins with human beings themselves. When the initiative lies in our own hands, we should not allow other obstacles to distract us, nor should we pay attention to statements that discourage us from progressing, working, and exerting the effort necessary to achieve what is required of us.
