Researchers from the Australian University of Sydney confirmed that five minutes of rest while working helps increase focus and attention.
The Journal of Educational and Development Psychologist notes that previous studies have shown that being outdoors provides a break from challenging tasks. But not everyone has such a possibility. Other studies revealed that watching videos has the same effect.
Now the researchers studied and analyzed the data of 72 people divided into three groups. The first group was asked to pass a complex math test in an accelerated manner in order to tire their attention. The members of the second group (a control group) were subjected to the same test, but without giving them five minutes of rest. Rather, they immediately began studying a short lecture on how to multiply two numbers by two numbers intellectually. During this, the first group was given 5 minutes to rest, with a countdown on the computer screen showing the remaining rest time. As for the third group, for five minutes they watched a video about wandering in a tropical forest.
After all this, all participants were subjected to a short survey that included questions about how distracted they were while carrying out the task they were assigned. Then, they were asked to solve 20 problems in order to determine their level of comprehension of the new material.
The researchers concluded from the results of this study that the first group had the highest average level of attention. They, as well as the members of the third group, exceeded the members of the second group (the control group). And that the third group was the best in solving the issues raised.
