Dietary supplements
In recent years and probably since the passing of the Dietary Supplement and Health Education Act (DSHEA), which requires the US Food and Drug Administration to treat supplements as harmless food products, a large number of food supplements that contain anabolic steroids either deliberately or by contamination have become readily available. This may have given rise to inadvertent violation of the anti-doping rules. An international study by Geyer et al. (2004), using GC-MS analysis, showed that of 634 nonhormonal nutritional supplements purchased in 13 countries from 215 different suppliers, 14.8% contained nondeclared androgenic-anabolic steroids (AASs). Of the supplements, 289 were from prohormone selling companies and 345 were from companies which did not offer prohormone supplements. Prohormones are converted in the body to hormones. Androstenedione and androstenediol are converted in the human system to testosterone. This indicates the problems associated with dietary supplements. Nevertheless, most governing bodies of sport work on the principle of strict liability and it is the responsibility of the competitor in human sport to avoid the administration of a prohibited substance.
