The first full colour image taken from NASA's James Webb Space Telescope is here... and it offers quite the view!

With this, we officially have the deepest infrared image of the universe to be ever taken. The image clicked by James Webb Space Telescope is extremely detailed, offering us a peek into what we can expect from such sophisticated telescopes that are looking back in time.

Yep, this picture shows galaxies and stars of the ancient past. Light takes time to travel to Earth, so what we see in the image is actually the space landscape as it looked right about 4.6 billion years ago.

The image shows SMACS 0723, also called Webb’s First Deep Field, with galaxy clusters acting as a looking glass for objects behind them. This technique is called gravitational lensing, and allowed James Webb Space Telescope to click old and far-off galaxies.

"This slice of the vast universe covers a patch of sky approximately the size of a grain of sand held at arm's length by someone on the ground," a NASA release said.

Webb's Near-Infrared Camera took the stunning image. It is composed of images that were taken at different wavelengths of light over 12.5 hours.

Webb is designed to look at habitable worlds like Earth far away while giving us a look at the oldest galaxies that were created after the Big Bang. It views galaxies in infrared light for this purpose, which is not visible to the human eye.
