A new study links prenatal depression with heart disease
A recent study published in the Journal of the American Heart Association reported that women who were diagnosed with depression during pregnancy had a higher likelihood of developing cardiovascular disease within two years of giving birth, compared to women who were not depressed.
"We need to use pregnancy as a window to future health," said lead study author Christina Ackerman-Banks, assistant clinical professor of obstetrics and gynecology at Baylor College of Medicine and Texas Children's Hospital in Houston.
The study talks about the association between depression during pregnancy and the possibility of developing cardiovascular disease within two years after giving birth.
The study of more than 100,000 people in the US, Maine, between 2007 and 2019 found that:
There is an association between the mental health of individuals during pregnancy and the risk of developing cardiovascular disease within two years of childbirth.
The most significant association was between depression and ischemic heart disease, with depressed individuals 83% more likely to develop the condition than those without a diagnosis of depression.
An increased risk of cardiovascular disease has been found even among individuals who do not have high blood pressure during pregnancy.
“Even after excluding women with hypertensive disorders during pregnancy, women with depression during pregnancy were still more likely to develop ischemic heart disease, arrhythmias, stroke, cardiomyopathy and new-onset chronic hypertension afterward,” Ackerman-Banks said.
