Scientists at two Russian institutes have created a standard sample of human DNA that is ahead of the characteristics of its American counterpart and helps improve the accuracy of cancer diagnoses.
This was reported by the press service of the Russian corporation "Rossstandart".
“In order to determine the metrological characteristics of the sequencers, I have so far used architectural samples made from imported raw materials,” said Anton Shlaev, an official of the Russian corporation “Rosstandard”. “And we had the opportunity to start manufacturing products that are completely independent of imports, which may not fully satisfy the needs of Not Only Russian metrologists and doctors, but we will offer this type of product for use in high-precision industrial and production processes.”
The Russian architectural sample ruGIAB is an advanced analogue of the so-called genome in a bottle (GIAB), which was developed by the US National Institute of Standards and Technology, and can be used not only in healthcare metrological support but also in other fields such as pharmaceuticals, environmental protection, agricultural and industrial biotechnology.
The Russian standard was developed by the All-Russian Research Institute of Scientific Metrology of the Rossstandart Corporation and the Pirogov Medical Research University.
The RuGIAB architectural sample was trialled on all high-throughput sequencing platforms, which allowed it to fully comply with international requirements.
“The urgent need to identify a number of mutations in the human genome can be traced in the diagnosis of cancer diseases, as every year about 140,000 studies are conducted in this regard,” said Denis Rebrikov, Vice President of the University of “Pirogov” for Scientific Research. Genomics using ruGIAB raises the standard for diagnosing various diseases.
