Water found in the atmosphere of an exoplanet ten times greater than that of Jupiter

The James Webb Space Telescope has detected traces of water vapor in the atmosphere of a very hot gas giant exoplanet orbiting its star in less than an Earth day (about 23 hours).

And James Webb, NASA's most powerful space telescope ever, watched intently WASP-18 b, a world 400 light-years from Earth.

And the giant gaseous world outside the solar system was discovered in 2008, and it is ten times larger than Jupiter, the largest planet in our solar system, and this is what makes it interesting.

The planet is quite extreme, orbiting the sun-like star WASP-18 at an average distance of just 1.9 million miles (3.1 million km). For comparison, the planet closest to the sun in the solar system, Mercury, orbits the sun at a distance of 39.4 million miles (63.4 million km).

And NASA said in a statement that because of this proximity to the host star, temperatures in the atmosphere of WASP-18 b are so high that most of the water molecules break up.

"The spectrum of the planet's atmosphere clearly shows many small, precisely measured water features, despite extreme temperatures of nearly 5,000 degrees Fahrenheit (2,700 degrees Celsius), NASA wrote in the statement. It is so hot that it would shred most water molecules apart, so seeing its presence indicates James Webb's extraordinary sensitivity to detecting remaining water."
