A study reveals the best drink for hydration and combating dehydration
There is nothing like water, so says all the previous research, but a recent study revealed that the body can get better hydration when drinking another drink.
It turns out that water does not rank first, according to what was published by "Citizen Digital", where researchers at the University of St. Andrews College of Medicine in Scotland said that water dose a very good job in hydrating the body quickly, but drinks that contain little sugar, fat or protein does a better job of keeping the human body hydrated for longer.
And the researcher, Professor at St. Andrews College of Medicine, Ronald Maughan, revealed that the reason for the human body's response to drinks is due to the volume of the drink.
Milk is more hydrating than water
Maughan added that another factor affecting how well crystalline water binds in a beverage is the nutrients it contains.
It turns out that milk is more hydrating than plain water, because it contains the sugar lactose and some proteins and fats, all of which help slow the emptying of fluid from the stomach and maintain hydration for longer.
Milk also contains sodium, which acts like a sponge and retains water in the body, leading to less urine production.
The same goes for oral rehydration solutions, which are used to treat diarrhea, because they contain small amounts of sugar, as well as sodium and potassium, which can also help promote water retention in the body.
Sugar in moderation
In turn, the nutritionist and spokeswoman for the American Academy of Nutrition, Melissa Majumdar, explained that electrolytes such as sodium and potassium contribute to improving hydration, while the calories in drinks lead to slower emptying of the stomach, thus slowing down the urination process.
But at the same time, it becomes difficult in the case of drinks that contain more concentrated sugars, such as fruit juices or cola, as they are not necessarily hydrating.
The reason is that these sugary and fizzy drinks stay longer in the stomach and are emptied more slowly compared to regular water, but once they enter the small intestine, their high concentration of sugars is diluted during a physiological process called osmosis.
Osmosis actually pulls water from the body into the small intestine to dilute the sugars in these drinks, so technically any items inside the intestine are out of the body in a short period of time.
Majumdar explained that juices and soda are not only less hydrating, but also provide additional sugars and calories, but do not give a feeling of satiety as much as solid foods, advising that if the choice is between soda and water for hydration, then the ideal option every time would be to drink water, especially since the kidneys The liver and liver depend on water to get rid of toxins in the human body, and water also plays a major role in maintaining skin elasticity and softness.
Moisturizing benefits
It is indicated that staying hydrated is important, as it keeps joints lubricated, helps prevent infection, and carries nutrients to the cells of the body.
If a person is thirsty, their body will tell them to drink more, but in the case of athletes, who train hard in warm conditions with extreme loss of sweat, or someone whose cognitive function may be negatively affected by working long hours without drink breaks, hydration becomes a critical issue. .
According to the results of the study, a regular cup of coffee containing about 80 milligrams of caffeine will be just as hydrating as water.
Additionally, consuming more than 300 mg of caffeine, or about 2-4 cups of coffee, can lead to excess fluid loss because caffeine causes a mild, short-term diuretic effect. Maughan recommends adding a tablespoon or two of milk to your cup of coffee to reduce the negative effects on hydration.
