Russian scientists plan to start next year with the first clinical trials on the use of the oncolytic virus, which they developed on the basis of the vaccine against smallpox, which will be used to treat brain cancer.
This is subject to the condition of obtaining approval to conduct these experiments from the competent medical authorities.
This was stated on the sidelines of the "Petersburg" International Economic Forum Vladimir Richter, head of the laboratory at the Institute of Chemical Biology and Basic Medicine of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences in the Russian city of Novosibirsk.
He said, "We have made some progress in ongoing trials to treat our breast cancer, which has prompted us to consider using this treatment in other forms of malignancy. Next year we hope to start clinical trials using oncolytic viruses to treat different types of brain cancer."
According to Vladimir Richter, Russian scientists have partners in medical institutions and private companies that are interested in conducting these interesting experiments and starting to use oncolytic viruses developed by Richter and his colleagues to destroy malignant tumors in the brain.
In upcoming clinical trials, scientists plan to study the possibility of using several methods to deliver the virus to infected tissues, including intravenous injections and immediate postoperative treatment of those areas of the brain where the primary tumor was previously present.
He said that clinical trials using viruses to treat brain cancer could begin in 2024.
