Young people with depression are more likely to develop dementia
3:8:20 2023-07-28 1285

A new scientific study warns that people who are diagnosed with depression in their youth are more likely to develop dementia later in life.

The study of more than 1.4 million Danish adults reported that men and women diagnosed with depression had a more than double risk of developing dementia, even if they were diagnosed as young or middle-aged adults.

The scientific research, published in the Journal of the American Medical Association of Neurology, examined a Danish registry of nearly 250,000 depressed citizens, and nearly 1.2 million without depression, and found that depressed people were 2.4 times more likely to develop dementia later in life. their lives, compared to those without depression.

The study also revealed that the association between depression and dementia holds true whether a person is diagnosed with depression early on, in middle age, or later.

The researchers cautioned that the study examines the link between depression and dementia, but does not explain why such a risk exists.

Commenting on the study findings, Holly C. Elser, a neurologist and epidemiologist at the University of Pennsylvania, who led the study, said: "Our study simply shows an association, but it doesn't explore the mechanisms."

"Future studies may investigate whether early childhood experiences or genetic factors are a common cause of depression and dementia," she added.

And she drew another unanswered question, which is "whether chemical changes in the brain present in individuals with depression subsequently increase a person's risk of developing dementia."

The study also examined whether patients who were treated with antidepressants 6 months before, or after a diagnosis of depression, had a different rate of dementia later in life. However, scientific research did not find a significant difference in dementia rates among those who took antidepressants.
