A top scientist has revealed the amazing benefit apples can have for brain health.
Food scientist Dr. Vincent Kandrawinata said there is good evidence to suggest that eating apples regularly can improve memory and reduce the risk of Alzheimer's disease.
This Sydney health researcher said eating more apples can "help you remember where you put your car keys" because they contain vitamins and minerals linked to memory preservation.
He said the fruit is rich in phenols, such as flavonoids, which may help reduce the risk of Alzheimer's disease by protecting the brain from harmful substances.
Dr. Vincent said that flavonoids can also be found in many other fruits and vegetables, and are also a powerful antioxidant agent that can reduce symptoms of depression and anxiety.
Vincent cited a US study of 2,800 participants aged around 50, which found that those who ate the least amount of flavonoid-rich foods were two to four times more likely to develop Alzheimer's disease and related dementia over a 20-year period.
Flavonoids are phenolic compounds found in fruits such as apples and pears, and vegetables such as cabbage and spinach.
Studies have shown that a higher intake of dietary flavonoids and their subclass flavonols may be associated with a reduced risk of Alzheimer's disease.
He explained that eating large quantities of apples can give the body important vitamins and minerals that protect brain cells from neurotoxicity that can lead to such neurodegenerative disorders.
Neurotoxicity can occur as a result of exposure to substances used in chemotherapy, radiotherapy, drug treatments, or even exposure to heavy metals such as mercury, some food additives, pesticides, industrial and cleaning solvents, and cosmetics.
