Do the things you are good at

We need to feel competent. So, take responsibility for the areas you excel at, whether it’s cooking, farming, or accounting, and ask for help where you struggle.

Researchers at Penn State noticed a strange trend in student grades. In departments with fewer required courses, students got higher grades overall. At first, the researchers assumed that this was because students chose the easiest subjects available. Then they discovered that students got higher grades in both electives and required subjects. The researchers concluded that the root cause was that, given the freedom to choose subjects, students tended to choose subjects that interested them and in which they could do well. But more importantly, doing well in these electives improved their performance in all subjects, because the positive habits created by success in electives transferred to required subjects.

Who are happier, stay-at-home parents or working parents? In studies comparing these two groups, the researchers found that both groups were happier because they felt competent in what they did.
