Following the establishment of the brotherhood covenant, Ali (a) entered into marriage with the Prophet’s daughter. However, there is some disagreement regarding the precise timing of their marriage. Prior to that, both Abu Bakr and Umar had expressed their interest in marrying Faṭima (a). However, the Prophet (s) declined their proposals. When he accepted Ali’s proposal to marry Faṭima (a), those people expressed complaints, to which the Prophet (s) responded by saying, “I did not marry Faṭima to Ali, but Allah did.” Upon the marriage of Ali (a) and Faṭima (a), the Prophet (s) asked them to reside in close proximity to him. This arrangement became possible through the selfless act of Ḥaritha b. al-Numan, who generously offered his own house to Ali (a). As a result, Ali’s residence became adjacent to that of the Prophet (s).
When the Prophet (s) sought Faṭima’s opinion on the prospect of her marriage to Ali (a), he expressed to her, “Would it not please you if I marry you to the foremost Muslim, the most knowledgeable, and the most patient?” Furthermore, the Prophet (s) told Faṭima (a), “Allah gazed upon the inhabitants of the earth and chose two individuals: one is your father and the other is your husband.” Imam al-Sadiq (a) expressed his perspective on the marriage by stating, “If Allah had not created Ali (a) for Faṭima (a), no one like him would be found on the earth as her equal since the time of Adam.”
The day following Ali and Faṭima’s marriage, the Prophet (s) visited their home. Umm Ayman answered the door, and the Prophet (s) inquired, “Where is my brother?” Umm Ayman, puzzled, asked, “May my father and mother be sacrificed for you, who is your brother?” The Prophet (s) responded, “Ali bin Abi Talib.” Umm Ayman, still perplexed, questioned, “How can Ali (a) be your brother when you have married him to your daughter?” The Prophet (s) explained, “That is how it is [Ali (a) is my brother], O Umm Ayman.”
As a result of this blessed union, Ali (a) and Faṭima (a) were blessed with three children. The firstborn was Imam al-Ḥasan (a), who entered the world in the middle of the month of Ramadan, 3/March 4, 625. Following that, on the 3rd or 5th of Shaban, 4/January 11 or 13, 626, Ali and Faṭima welcomed their second child, Imam al-Ḥusayn (a), into the world. It is believed that Zaynab (a), the third child of Ali and Fatima, possibly came into the world in Medina during 6/627.
