In Shawwāl, 8/January-February 630, Ali (a) played an active role in the Battle of Ḥunayn, where he joined forces with the Prophet (s) in a military engagement against the Hawāzin tribe. During this significant battle, Ali (a) carried one of the flags of the Muslim army. Amidst the chaos of the battle, when some Muslims began to flee,6 Ali (a), along with notable individuals like ʿAbbās b. ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib and al-Faḍl b. ʿAbbās, stood firmly by the side of the Prophet (s). In this critical moment, Ali (a) managed to slay the standard-bearer of the Hawāzin. On some accounts, Ali (a) displayed extraordinary prowess and vanquished 40 adversaries single-handedly.
