For example, a child has the labels of perceptual motor problem (and cerebral palsy which simply means brain damage) and cannot draw shapes (circle, rectangle, triangle) successfully. The deficit approach would be to focus on this and give more practice at holding and manipulating the pencil (pencil exercises), backed up by drawing the offending shapes pages and pages of further practice. This is not to say that practice does not have its place but not more and more of the same in a soul sapping diet. This applies to reading, mathematics and many other subjects or forms of teaching across the curriculum and through the phases of schooling.
