All parents remember the first day their child went to school. On that day, he wore his most beautiful clothes and packed his things in a beautiful and new backpack. Then, he entered his classroom, ready to begin his learning journey. School should be a great experience, but it is not for many boys as their enthusiasm wears off in the face of academic problems and behavioral disturbances as well as unkind teachers. There are many reasons why many boys hate school and there are many ways parents can help.
Why do Boys suffer in school?
The statistics are realistic. According to the United States Department of Education, boys' results are worse than girls' results in reading thirty years ago... at all ages and every year. Two-thirds of special education students in the secondary grades are boys, and 50% of boys tend to fail in the eighth grade compared to girls. Boys are diagnosed with lack of concentration or learning difficulties five times more often than girls; they are also referred to a psychiatrist at school more than girls. Behind these statistics, we find boys of flesh and blood, who fear school, and spend hours in the principal's office, refusing to do their homework, and telling worried parents, "The teacher doesn't like me." Why ?
You know that girls and boys grow and develop differently, especially in the first years of life. Girls usually acquire language and social skills, while boys tend to act recklessly and have more energy and do not deal easily with reading and writing. Most of the teachers in the nursery and primary classes are women, and they often find it difficult to deal with the competitive and energetic style of young boys.
Many young boys discover very early on that the teacher does not seem to like them as much as she loves the girls, who have no difficulty in sitting quietly and silently, in following directions and in doing their work. Boys' problems with school start early. The Yale Children's Study Center indicates that a child is nearly three times more likely to be expelled from kindergarten than a kindergarten, and boys are four and a half times more likely to be expelled from kindergarten than a girl. The causes of most expulsions are related to behavioral problems, and many of these behavioral problems occur when young boys act like boys. By the time a boy reaches real school age, he has decided that the classroom is a place where he feels incompetent, unloved, and unwanted.
