The Qur’an silenced the masters of eloquence, leaving them unable to produce anything comparable to it, and rendered the rhetoricians incapable of competing with it. Their eloquence became like that of Sahban when compared with that of Baqil; they united in an attempt to challenge it, yet found no one to support them. They pledged and made agreements among themselves, but found neither a helper nor a supporter. They returned in disappointment and defeat, unable to produce anything like it: “Even if some of them were to support others.” [Al-Isra’: 88]
Thus, they submitted and surrendered, led by the reins of humiliation and abasement, and they became submissive, confined within the bonds of humiliation and captivity. Al-khizāmah is a ring made of hair that is placed in the soft part of a camel’s nose, with the reins attached to it; its plural is khazā’im. Al-ribq, with a kasrah on the rā’, is a rope containing several loops, used to tie young animals, particularly the offspring of sheep. Its singular is bahmah, a term that applies to both male and female. Sikhāl refers to the offspring of goats. When the young of sheep and goats are collectively referred to, they are called abhām or bahm. The singular of the loops is ribqah, while the plurals are ribq, arbāq, and riqāq.
