Curcumin is a key to saving coral reefs from climate change
3:16:25 2023-08-01 1456

A team of researchers discovered an effective natural substance to protect coral reefs from the damage caused by the effects of climate change on the marine environment and its organisms, mainly the phenomenon of coral bleaching, which is a phenomenon mainly caused by climate change.

A team from several Italian universities and research institutions discovered the effectiveness of curcumin, a natural antioxidant extracted from turmeric, in reducing coral bleaching. The research team developed curcumin, a biodegradable substance without causing damage to the surrounding marine environment.

On the other hand, the press release issued by the Italian Institute of Technology - published on the "Uric Alert" website on July 19 - confirmed that the tests, which were conducted in the Genoa Basin, showed great effectiveness in preventing coral bleaching.

Coral reefs are structures consisting of living organisms that abound in the tropics, and they are also organisms that preserve the marine environment, as they are among the richest environments that contain multiple types of living marine species.

According to the press release, coral bleaching is a phenomenon that leads - in extreme cases - to the death of these organisms, with devastating consequences for the environment of coral reefs - which are of critical importance to the global economy - and the protection of coasts from natural disasters, and marine biodiversity. Most corals also live in symbiosis with microscopic algae, which are essential to their survival and are responsible for their vibrant colors.
