Russian pediatrician Tatiana Nemaltseva spoke about the negative health consequences that a prolonged runny nose can lead to.
She said: "In the cold season, many people suffer from nasal congestion for a long time. You must be careful and take the necessary measures if the runny nose continues for more than two weeks."
The doctor explained: “If you suffer from chronic rhinitis, its signs are the appearance of cracks in the nose, dryness and burning in the mucous membrane, headache, and yellow discharge in the nose.
She said: “There are several types of rhinitis, and their causes may be different.
The first is chronic rhinitis resulting from acute rhinitis that has not been completely treated, and it often occurs in children. Hypertrophic rhinitis is particularly dangerous, as the nasal mucosa swells, leading to obstruction. As a result, the child often complains of headaches and difficulty breathing.
The second type is chronic allergic rhinitis. It is characterized by profuse secretions, often accompanied by itchy eyes and frequent sneezing.
Rhinitis caused by taking painkillers and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs is the third type of disease. It is accompanied by severe swelling of the mucous membrane, and the reason is the use of vasoconstrictor drops.
According to the specialist, a runny nose for a long time is dangerous. It is important to see an ear, nose and throat doctor to get the necessary help.”
The doctor explained, “The nasal mucosa forms a barrier to the penetration of various pathogens into the body. When the barrier function is disrupted, the risk of infection increases. Complications occur. You may develop chronic rhinitis, as well as sinusitis, middle ear infection, bronchitis, or Pneumonia".
