Is it bad behavior or just energy?

You only have to look at the human body to realize that it was created for movement.

In a beautiful book, Bruce Chatwin notes that men and women living in the jungles of the Kalahari Desert carry their children an average of 4,000 km before the child can walk on his own.

Our bodies are designed to cover so many kilometers each day, which explains why adults and children feel sluggish and bored when they remain motionless. Worse still, computer games or watching exciting TV shows can make children tremble because they cause the body to release adrenaline without any outlet. Children should get outside and get comprehensive physical exercise daily.

Psychologist Kerry Ann Brown believes that many skills that emerge later, such as reading, writing, posture, and general coordination, depend on the amount of running, racing, catching, and expending large amounts of energy in their early school years. Such early activities regulate the mind and build muscles to aid in the development of smaller motor skills, such as holding a pen later on. Even carrying children in backpacks and the like has a significant impact, as does all the rough play a parent plays with their young children on the living room floor.

A bouncer (a piece of cloth stretched over a metal object used for bouncing as a form of exercise) is a good investment of energy, as is any climbing or swinging device; provided it is safe and carefully designed, equipment with these specifications is worth its weight in gold.

Parks are also a major advantage. You should contact your local council to ensure they provide plenty of play areas in warm, sheltered locations with shade and adult seating. These parks should be close to home and not in unsafe areas where young mothers feel they are at risk. They should also be fenced so that an adult can read a magazine without worrying about the children getting lost. Clean toilets are also essential. When you're in financial trouble, take your children to a park. I've often spent Saturdays at parks, content with snacks and sandwiches. This is how I brought happiness to my children at a minimal cost!
