In year 622, the Prophet (s) embarked on the migration from Mecca to Yathrib, which was henceforth renamed Medina. Before the migration, the polytheists had convened at Dar al-Nadwa in Mecca and conspired to launch a furtive attack on the Prophet’s house during the night with the intention of assassinating him. The Prophet (s) became aware of the plot through divine revelation. In order to deceive the polytheists, he instructed Ali (a) to sleep in his place and cover himself with the Prophet’s customary blanket. This plan aimed to mislead the attackers into believing that the Prophet (s) was present and sleeping there. According to certain sources, when Ali (a) asked the Prophet (s), “Will you be safe if I sleep in your place?” the Prophet (s) assured him that he would indeed be safe. Upon hearing this affirmative response, Amīr al-Muminin (a) was filled with joy and gratitude, and prostrated in thankfulness to Allah. This event is commonly known as Laylat al-Mabit or “the Night of Sleeping, and it is referenced in numerous historical sources.5 Some Quranic exegetes believe that the verse “And among the people is he who sells his soul seeking the pleasure of Allah, and Allah is most kind to [His] servants “(Q 2:207) was revealed on this occasion.
While the Prophet (s) was seeking refuge from the Quraysh in the Thawr Cave, Ali (a) played a crucial role in their safety. He ensured they had access to water and food, and went beyond that by providing three riding animals for their journey to Yathrib, along with a guide.
